Technical Principle
Using an effective combination between the technology of drilling fluid for ultra-low permeability reservoir formations and the technology of general-purpose shielding and temporary plugging, a series of film-forming bridging drilling fluid systems have been developed and optimized. Based on the pore-throat characteristics of the reservoir, selecting properly sized reservoir formation bridging and protection additives to optimize the particle distribution of solid phase in drilling fluid, for comforting with the reservoir pore-throat distribution, effectively temporary bridging and plugging can be achieved. Meanwhile, the film-forming agent is also contributing to plugging reservoir pore-throats, as well as plugging of micro pore within rigid particles, which significantly and comprehensively improves the plugging effectiveness. As a final result, the formation strength is improved, the safe mud density window is widened, and the proper reservoir protection with nearly zero loss can be delivered.
Technical Advantages
Compared to conventional drilling fluid system, the film-forming plugging drilling fluid system is developed with following advantages:
- lower filtration loss under high temperature and high pressure (HTHP), lower than normal standard as 25ml, to form a sealing film on the surface of the mud cake to improve the resistance of filtration consequently. The filtration loss can be reduced and maintained at the range of 5 -6 ml, which demonstrates that the drilling fluid system has remarkable effectiveness of controlling filtration loss.
- The system has very strong shale inhibition capacity, as test results of recovery rate of shales collected from various shale formations of different oilfields, the first-time recovery rate is achieved in the range of 60% and 80%. The system also is capable to protect reservoir perfectly, based on permeability recovery tests on cores with high/medium/low permeability, the test results indicating recovery of over 90%.
